Rapsodo MLM2XPRO in Australia: What's New, Putting, Memberships and Setup

Rapsodo MLM2X PRO golf launch monitor on its tripod, available at Aussie Golf Sims

Rapsodo has a new launch monitor, and it's the one plenty of MLM2PRO owners have been asking for. The Rapsodo MLM2XPRO keeps the radar and dual camera setup that made the MLM2PRO such a popular first sim unit here in Australia, then adds the thing it was always missing: putting. It's also quicker to connect, quicker to show your shots, and it arrives with a whole new set of apps behind it.

Below we've broken down what's actually changed, what you get for free versus what sits behind a membership, how much room you'll need at home, and who we think should buy one.

Quick answer

  • What it is: the Rapsodo MLM2XPRO is Rapsodo's new portable launch monitor and simulator. It sits behind the ball and uses doppler radar plus two cameras to track 15 metrics.
  • Biggest upgrade: simulator putting, so you can finish every hole instead of relying on auto putts.
  • Also new: connection and shot display rated at twice the speed of the MLM2PRO, a level and battery display on the unit, an adjustable tripod and 12 RPT balls in the box.
  • Memberships: the free app covers range practice. Core unlocks sim golf, putting and the training tools. Studios adds premium 4K courses on PC.
  • Room needed: plan on around 4.3 to 5 metres of depth, with the unit sitting roughly 2 to 2.6 metres behind the ball.
  • Best for: first time home sim builders who want putting, and MLM2PRO owners who've been waiting for it.

What is the Rapsodo MLM2XPRO?

The MLM2XPRO is a portable launch monitor that sits on a small tripod behind you while you hit. Inside it, a doppler radar and two high speed cameras split the work: the radar reads speed, while the cameras watch the ball and club through impact. Between them it tracks 15 metrics, and eight of those are directly measured rather than calculated: club speed, ball speed, launch angle, launch direction, spin rate, spin axis, club path and angle of attack.

Club path and angle of attack are measured directly by the MLM2XPRO, just as they are on the MLM2PRO. They tell you how the club was actually moving through the ball, which is usually the missing piece when you're trying to sort out a slice or work out why your irons keep coming out thin.

It runs from your phone or tablet, or from a PC when you want the big screen, and it's equally at home at the driving range or in the garage. Rapsodo is positioning it as the centre of a whole new software lineup, which we cover further down.

What's new compared to the MLM2PRO

If you've used an MLM2PRO, the MLM2XPRO will feel familiar. Most of the changes are about how it feels to live with day to day.

  • Simulator putting. The headline feature, and it gets its own section below.
  • Faster connection and shot display. Rapsodo rates both at twice as fast as the MLM2PRO. In a home sim that lag between strike and screen is what makes a session feel clunky, so it matters more than it sounds.
  • A display on top of the unit. It shows battery, connection status and whether the unit is level, so there's less guesswork when shots aren't registering.
  • A redesigned tripod. It now has an adjustable leg, which helps on uneven range ground or a floor that isn't perfectly flat.
  • A full dozen RPT balls. Up from three. RPT balls carry a printed pattern the cameras use to measure spin, and you'll get either Titleist Pro V1 or Callaway Chrome Tour.

What hasn't changed is the core hardware. It's still radar plus dual cameras, and it still sits behind the ball, so there's no risk of hitting it.

Simulator putting: how it works and what to expect

Putting has been the big gap in Rapsodo's range. On the MLM2PRO, sim rounds stopped at the green and putts were handled automatically. That's fine for a quick hit, but it takes a lot of the fun (and pressure) out of a proper round with your mates.

With the MLM2XPRO and a Core membership, you can putt out every hole across Rapsodo's library of 30,000+ courses. A few things worth knowing before you get too excited:

  • You need a putter added to your bag in the app, otherwise putting won't kick in.
  • Early hands on testing found medium and long putts read well for pace and line, while very soft short putts could read a little shorter than they actually rolled. Rapsodo usually refines this sort of thing through software updates, but it's good to know going in.
  • Keep the ball still once the unit is ready. Bumping it can register a putt you never meant to hit.
  • Rapsodo has said putting won't be added to the MLM2PRO, so this is an MLM2XPRO only feature.

Indoors you'll be putting off your mat or turf, so a smooth, consistent surface makes a difference. Most quality hitting mats or turf will do the job.

Apps, memberships and what you get for free

Rapsodo has rebuilt its software around the MLM2XPRO, and it's worth getting your head around before you buy, because a lot of the good stuff sits behind a membership.

  • Rapsodo Golf mobile app. Free on iOS and Android. This is your everyday app for range sessions, shot tracking and training.
  • Rapsodo Golf PC app. A full screen version built for home simulators. It's free to download for owners and connects to the unit by USB-C, with sim play needing a membership.
  • Rapsodo Studios. The premium tier, with detailed 4K courses on PC. Nearly 30 real world and partner courses are available at launch, with more being added.
  • R-Cloud. Syncs your sessions across devices and keeps a library of up to 10,000 shots.

The training tools are where Core earns its keep for players who want to improve. Bag Mapping builds a reliable carry number for every club so you know your gaps, Wedge Matrix gives you numbers for full, three quarter, half and quarter wedge swings, and Target Range scores your accuracy using strokes gained.

Prefer other sim software? Rapsodo lists GSPro, E6 Connect, E6 Apex and Awesome Golf as simulation partners. Each needs its own licence from the developer, and some partner compatibility lists hadn't been updated for the MLM2XPRO at launch, so check the software maker's list before you pay for a licence.

If you're buying your first launch monitor and putting matters to you, the Rapsodo MLM2XPRO is the one to get. You're paying $400 more, but you get putting, faster feedback and the software Rapsodo will be building on from here.

If you already own an MLM2PRO and mostly use it for range work or full swing practice, the case is weaker. Your MLM2PRO is still supported in Rapsodo's apps, and the upgrade really comes down to putting, speed and the new software.

And if you're on a tighter budget and happy to skip putting, the MLM2PRO at its current price is still solid value. Our full MLM2PRO review covers it in detail.

How much room do you need?

Because the MLM2XPRO sits behind the ball, depth is the measurement that matters most. The unit needs to be roughly 2 to 2.6 metres behind the ball (the PC app walks you through the exact spot during alignment), and you also need a sensible gap between the ball and your screen.

  • Depth: around 4.3 to 5 metres gives you room for the unit behind you plus a safe distance to the screen.
  • Width and ceiling height: these depend on your swing and whether you're left or right handed. Our golf simulator room size guide breaks it down.

Single garages, sheds and spare rooms can all work. If you're not sure about your space, send us your measurements and we'll help you plan it out.

Building a full simulator around the MLM2XPRO

The launch monitor is only one piece. To turn the MLM2XPRO into a proper home simulator you'll want:

  • An enclosure and impact screen. The enclosure frames your bay and keeps stray shots contained, while the impact screen at the back takes the hit and displays the picture. Our golf simulator enclosures come with a screen included.
  • A hitting mat. It protects your joints and gives the launch monitor a consistent strike surface. Browse our hitting mats and turf.
  • A projector. A short throw projector puts the image on the screen without you casting a shadow. See our short throw projectors.
  • A PC, if you want the big screen app or Studios. 4K courses lean heavily on the graphics card, so a dedicated gaming PC like our golf simulator PCs is the safe bet.

Who should buy the MLM2XPRO?

It's a good fit if you:

  • Are building your first home sim and want putting without a big jump in price.
  • Split your practice between the range and the garage.
  • Want faster connection and shot display, plus the on-unit battery and level display.
  • Have a family keen to play too, with sub accounts and junior tees available on Studios.

You might look elsewhere if you:

  • Want to avoid a subscription altogether, because much of the MLM2XPRO's value sits in Core.
  • Are setting up a commercial venue that needs premium tracking. Our launch monitor buyer's guide covers higher end options.
  • Already own an MLM2PRO and don't care about putting.

Our take

The MLM2XPRO isn't a reinvention of the MLM2PRO, and it doesn't need to be. It fixes the things owners complained about most: no putting, slow connection and fiddly setup. For a lot of Australians building their first home simulator, that combination at this price will be hard to look past. Just go in knowing the membership is part of the deal, and that putting is likely to keep improving with updates.
